Rigging: Boston Center for the Arts
Sweeping changes allow a massive art space to reopen.
The Cyclorama is the Center's flagship venue, a 23,000 square foot circular room originally opened in 1865 to house a monumental painting of the Battle of Gettysburg. The grid that hangs in the space (pictured above) was designed by Buckminster Fuller and measures approximately 75' by 80'.
I designed complete replacement rigging for this massive structure in collaboration with a structural engineering firm, and led a team of riggers to remove all of the old rigging and install the new. Because of constraints on time and money we performed the work without lowering the grid to the floor, instead setting an array of chain motors so that we could release tension on one section of lift points at a time and replace them. It was a great deal of fun.
