Rigging: Private Residence
Better living through suspension.
The clients needed a place to park their stereo system and store their sizable collection of 12" records.
We built these shelves into a space that was created by removing the walls enclosing a useless closet. They float about an inch from the walls in any direction and make a nice, skip-proof platform for the record player. This is one house where you can dance like crazy and the music will keep going.
- The shelves are 2" rough-cut spruce, finished with linseed oil and beeswax.
- We milled the battens from reclaimed wood that came out of the demolition.
- I chose 3/16" lubricated plain steel cable for its bold, industrial look. Even after thorough wiping with a dry rag, the oil sticks in the grooves between the strands of the cable, creating a lovely chiaroscuro.
